Character progression in The Witcher 3 is very complex, and one of the first 'pressure points' you'll encounter as a player. The 'build' you choose for Geralt can be totally tweaked for your own personal playstyle, so if you're a fan of rushing into battle with hard-hitting melee attacks, you can.

A quick note before we begin; by no means is this guide supposed to be the final say on effective builds for Geralt, but we hope that it'll at least give you some ideas as to how you want to play, and which skills you should subsequently invest in. Oh, and another thing: you must be at least level 30 to make full use of these builds, as that's when all 12 of your skill slots will become available. Ready? Let's get started.

witcher 3 add skill points

As the name suggests, this build is focused purely on combat skills and is all about being as effective as possible in hitting enemies hard. It comprises of fast attacks, strong attacks, defensive techniques, and lots of adrenaline points, all of which combine to create a fighter who relies on his weapons and reflexes rather than fancy stuff like magic and alchemy. While Pure Combat lacks versatility, it is highly specialised and is perfect for those players who see themselves as action heroes first and foremost.

Possibly the most demanding build, Pure Alchemy focuses totally on alchemy skills, and is all about making your potions, oils, bombs, and decoctions as potent as possible. This build requires patience and plenty of ingredient foraging. It goes without saying that you'll still have to make use of swordplay and signs, but alchemy will bolster all of your abilities, allowing you to exploit as many enemy weaknesses as possible.

Focusing mostly on the combat skill category, the Offensive Warrior build is all about supporting your swordplay with damaging signs and buff-based alchemy. This build is for players who wish to push the offensive, ideally killing their enemies before there's much need for defensive moves.

Focusing mostly on the combat skill category, the Defensive Warrior build is all about supporting your swordplay with defence-orientated signs and buff-based alchemy; you might not be the heaviest-hitter, but you'll outlast your enemies. Indeed, this build is largely about survivability: defending against your opponent's attacks effectively while waiting for the perfect chance to strike back.

Splitting focus between combat skills and alchemy skills, the Alchemical Warrior is a build that's all about supporting your swordplay with plenty of alchemical knowledge. Potions, oils, bombs, and decoctions will give you an advantage with the right preparation, and then you'll utilise your combat prowess to finish the job. This build strikes a neat balance between raw power and buffs, but remember you'll need to scrub up on your alchemy knowledge to make the most of it.

Splitting focus between combat skills and signs, the Spellsword is a versatile build that's all about combining the powers of sword and spell for the best results. Signs are used to take advantage of your enemy's weaknesses, while your combat prowess will allow you to kill them off with the minimum of effort when the time comes.

A specialised build that's all about maximising the damage of your fast attacks, while staying alive by dodging. Quick, deadly strikes are this build's bread and butter, while evasive techniques, various signs, and adrenaline points also play a role. A build for those who prefer to use agility to get the best of their enemies, and like swift blows compared to meaty combos.

I don't entirely agree that The Witcher 3 is a game which requires you to build a character as it's not exactly a free RPG where you make your own story such as Fallout/Baldur's Gate/Divinity, rather a story RPG where you role-play as Geralt - a pre-determined character who specializes in every asset he has at his disposal. There are even easy-to-attain re-spec potions which, with the use of a few quick saves and loads, let you experience every attribute of the skill tree without any trouble.

Skill points are points awarded to the player character when reaching a new level of experience. The points can then be allocated to whatever skills they feel are in need of improvement. Certain books, traits, and perks give the player character a skill point bonus for a specific skill as well.

The number of attainable skill points (without any skill books, perks, or Broken Steel) varies depending on your Intelligence stat. It can be as low as 209 with 1 INT and can be as high as 380 with 10 INT. Combined with the Comprehension perk, Educated perk, every Vault-Tec bobblehead and at least 20 of every skill book (excluding Speech), one can achieve a 100% stat in all 13 skills.

An Intelligence of 10 means 20 skill points per level-up, multiplied by 19 for the amount of levels the player can allocate skill points equals, at maximum, 380 skill points. Every skill starts at no less than 5 and stat points have to go somewhere. The least efficient way to allocate points in terms of skill ranks is S10 L2 and the remaining 23 points the player can allocate going to Endurance, Charisma or Agility; counting Tag bonuses, this results in (2+1)*13 + 10*2*1 + 23*2*2 +3*15 = = 196 skill points allocated out of the 1,300 it will require to max them all out. If the player doesn't exploit any bugs they can only collect 23 Barter skill books and have to choose to give up 1 of a Science or Energy Weapons skill book; lastly, a Small Guns skill book is locked behind a perk. That means the total base skill points in the game from skill books is 25*10+23+24+24=321; collecting all of the skill bobbleheads will add another 130, and using S10 P1 E10 C10 I1 A6 L2 as an example baseline, collecting all of the stat bobbleheads (in this case, the ones for P, I, A, and L) will get 6*2+4*2+13 = 33 more points. That's 680 points (out of 1,300) without spending any specific effort other than avoiding leveling up skills that are going to be buffed with skillbooks.

The Broken Steel add-on raises the level cap to 30, and therefore adds a potential 200 extra skill points (20 skill points per level for 10 levels) to the game, for a total of 580 skill points at 10 INT.

Decimal values (0.5's) on odd Intelligence level gains are saved for the next level. For example, with 9 Intelligence, the first level up nets 14 points. The next level up will net 15 points. In reality, the player character gains 14.5 points then 14.5 points.

The perk Educated, available at level 4, adds an extra 2 points per level up. This yields an extra 52 points if taken at level 4. Add-ons increase level-cap, further increasing the number of extra skill points by 10 per add-on.

The maximum obtainable amount of skill points (without add-ons) is 502. This requires creating a character with 10 Intelligence and taking the Educated perk at level 4. It is also possible to get the maximum skill points with a starting Intelligence of 9, by getting the Intense Training perk or Intelligence Implant before reaching level 3. With the add-ons' extra 20 levels, there is a maximum of 827 points available. Also through the use of an exploit involving the Skilled trait and Intelligence of seven or eight, it is possible to gain 100 in every skill by levels in the upper 40s (this still requires most skill books, but does not require the Comprehension perk).

However, as with a lot of Witcher 3's systems, the Skill tree is intricate and deep, and it's easy to get lost in working out all the potential customisations that'd benefit your chosen play style. So as part of our continuing guide series to Wild Hunt, we break down the essentials of the game's Skill tree system, outlining what you need to know, how it works and most importantly what customised skills you can build for yourself.

As with so many other RPGs, Geralt earns experience points by killing enemies and completing quests, gradually levelling up. The Witcher 3 allows for a maximum of 70 levels (although you'll be playing a long time to get there) and hitting each level unlocks a skill point that you can spend on upgrading your character.

The skill tree for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is divided into four categories: Combat (red), Signs (blue), Alchemy (green) and General (neutral). Within each category you can find numerous specialised options in different branches, such as increasing the damage for both fast and heavier attacks in the Combat tab.

For example, if you put a green Mutagen in one Skill column, it will activate the corresponding effect (better health in this case). For each green skill in that same column, the effect of the Mutagen will be enhanced, so it is very important to maximise Mutagens and skill positioning.

Tip: Do you regret how you've distributed your skill points? There is a solution in the form of a potion that allows you to reset all points and reallocate them. You can find a merchant that sells it in Novigrad, but it will cost you 1,000 coins.

Warriors in classic RPGs are usually tough and strong, which means they can withstand a heavy blow and deal an even stronger one. The emphasis of this class build is in the heavy attacks, which Geralt can use to crush his opponents. This also means building a proper defence, so it is necessary to invest in heavy armour (which also reinforces the heavy attack skills).

To fuel your damage dealing, you must use the synergy that exists between Stamina and Adrenaline, using various Skills such as Adrenaline Burst and Focus. This means that with three points of Adrenaline, you will increase your damage by 30%, and that's on top of all the improvements that'd be applied to a heavy attack. In short, you will become an unstoppable bulldozer.

Assassins or Rogues are typically stealthy, agile and skillful characters, with thorough knowledge of several types of chemicals. In the world of the Witcher 3 there is little room for stealth, but you can make something great with the other characteristics of the classic assassin build. It is a style of play that will wear the enemy down, while allowing you to avoid taking damage. Unlocking the skills are not enough however; you must also master timing and attack patterns for when to dodge or roll out of danger, as you will be equipped with light armour. 2ff7e9595c
